Malam Rentak Rasa RAKIS
9 August 2009 (Wednesday) – To further encourage and support Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Rakis club talent, the Rakis club recently organised an appreciation night – “Malam Rentak Rasa”. The event was held at the UBD Female Residential College multi purpose hall.
The guest of honour was UBD Dean of Students, Dk Dr Nurolaini bte Pg Hj Muhammad Kifli. Also present was UBD Deputy Dean of Students, Dr Hj Ramlee bin Tingkong, academic staff as well as representatives from the UBD Student Representative Council (PMUBD). The event was not only attended by those who are residing at the UBD residential college, but also interested members of the public.
The event saw various performances from the Rakis club like the Mahsuri legendary drama, a comedy drama titled “Jangan” and also a special performance by the new UBD students called “GenNext performance”.
The performances were then concluded with a video presentation of “3 premier” in which the Rakis members shot three different movies around the UBD campus
One of the Rakis members said, “The objective of the event was to foster relationship between the senior and junior members of the club. It also helps the students to enhance their skills and creativity in organising such a event.”
The Rakis club members also set up a mini bazaar at the female residential college foyer. Various food items, clothes and literature books were available at the mini bazaar.
The Rakis club is currently under the UBD Student Association (PMUBD) and is supervised by the UBD Malay Literature academic staff. Members of the Rakis club are mostly Malay Literature students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FASS). The club is well known for performing drama shows in UBD as well as at public events.

UBD Freshers’ Week: Vice Chancellor’s Special Address
27 July 2009 (Monday) – The UBD Freshers’ Week (used to be called UBD Orientation Week) continues with the Special Address from the Vice Chancellor of UBD, Dr. Hj. Zulkarnain bin Hj Hanafi. He stated that students should be active in every aspect including their academics, extra-curricular activities (ECA) and involvement in community service. He also added that the new student intake are part of the digital generation; Google and the likes of Google can provide information for the students and urged that lecturers acknowledge the power of Facebook and Twitter. Present during the ceremony were the Assistant Vice-Chancellors, Primary Officers, Deans, Deputy Deans, Program Leaders and other UBD staff.
The Special Address was followed by a briefing on the Student Affairs Section by the Dean of Students, Dk. Dr. Nurolaini Pg Hj Muhammad Kifli, who explained the roles and duties of the Student Affairs staff, and introduced the students to some of the members of SAS.
The President of the Student Representative Council (SRC) also gave a speech where he welcomed the new intake of 2009/2010 and gave a brief introduction about PMUBD and how PMUBD can help make the students’ 4 years study in UBD more interesting by participating in activities organised by the SRC and clubs under PMUBD.
The afternoon session will involve briefings by the library staff and a tour of the library. The new students will also be receiving their copies of the first Freshers’ Magazine later in the afternoon.

Visit to the Berakas Fire and Rescue Station on 3 June 2009
On 3rd June 2009 (Wednesday) a group of 27 UBD Students headed by Hj.Afiq (Head of ICT and Publicity Exco) and supported by Bazilah (Health, Safety and Environment Exco) conducted a trip to the Berakas Fire and Rescue Station. The group arrives at the station around 8:30am and they proceed to the Special Squad Unit Lecture Theatre to hear briefing from SO Norzali, and fire officer Fairul and Aflan about history, role and jobs of fire rescue and also career opportunities.
From briefing the group proceed to the Special Squad training tower where SO Rozita brief about the Special Suqd and witness the Special Squad personnel demonstrating the building abseiling technique such as Spiderman technique, Victim rescue technique, General abseiling and the famous flying fox. Some students are given chance to flying fox.
Their last stop is the Women Operation Unit Station where they tried the fireman sliding pole and seeing around the station. Lastly, they are brief about various fire appliances used at the station and given chance to have a ride on the station sole Hydraulic Platform (Snorkel) appliance.
At last PMUBD would like to say thanks to the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department personnel, Berakas FRS, Women Operational Unit and Special Squad members for being friendly and cooperative during the visit. Insyallah, 2nd trip to the fire station will be conducted in next semester.

Visit to Brunei fire and rescue department 3 June 2009

Venue: Brunei Fire and Rescue HQ and Berakas Fire and Rescue Station, Old Airport Road, Berakas.
Time: Scheduled arrived at the HQ at 8:30am and ends at 11.00am (gather at CH at 7:45am)
Persons involved: 45 persons
Payment for the trip is B$5 and payment can be made at PMUBD office. Registration is open now. Last payment is on 3rd June 2009.

PMUBD through Head of ICT and Publicity Exco with cooperation from Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Exco and Project, Recreation and Visit Exco (KERPL) will be conducting a trip to Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) Headquarters and the nearby Berakas Fire and Rescue Station.
Among the objectives of the trip is to expose students to the real-life of the firefighters, as a foundation to firefighting career and as self awareness program for emergency.
*Insyallah, 2nd trip will be held next semester possibly August.
